This is a list of books recommended by Men Are Human and our readers. Most are cited texts important to the movement, a few are foundational texts, and others are simply noteworthy books that mention or discuss our issues. These can range from books criticising negative or ‘toxic’ ideologies that harm equality, books about current and historical issues, and personal stories from abused men and boys.

We also intend to include a fiction list for novels that cover these topics or have themes important to the movement.

Please feel free to recommend a book we haven’t covered.

Non-Fiction Books

Foundational Books

These books are ones that many in the Men’s Human Rights Moment consider to be more-or-less required reading. They tend to include strong criticisms both of culture and sexist anti-male narratives.

Male Victims & Female Abusers

An absolutely taboo subject, the abuse of men and criminality of women is denied by many. These books shine a long-needed light on the ability of women to do harm to others, and the suffering of men in our society. Very often, these two things overlap. To tell the whole story, we must acknowledge male victims and afford them equal status. We must also, equally, punish female abusers as harshly as men.

History

The Men’s Human Rights Moment is constantly researching and re-evaluating what we are told about history by schools, ideologues, governments, and ‘common knowledge’. This is especially true when it comes to viewpoints that seem suspiciously one-sided. These narratives often fall apart at the slightest prodding, especially when it concerns the idea that “all men have victimised all women for thousands of years”. Turns out the truth is very different to the fiction.
